The eThekwini Metro results are in and the ANC has lost its outright majority. The party is in control but needs to find at least 15 more seats from coalition partners if it wants to rule.
With 99 percent of the vote finalised, the IEC is ready to formally declare the result of the 2021 Local Government Election on Thursday.
At 21:30 the IEC election result dashboard hit the elusive 90 percent mark. Here is an overview of how things stand at a national and provincial level. KZN (81%) and the Western Cape (86%) are lagging behind while the Free State has completed 100 percent of its results.
The IEC said 89,8% of expected results are finalised and 99,3% is already captured on the system. Mamabolo said the Commision would not rest until results in all municipalities have been declared – 80 are still incomplete.
“We want to see EFF mayors and members of Mayoral Committees. We want to see EFF speakers of municipalities. Whoever is going to talk to us must know that that is ultimately going to be the outcome of deliberations,” said Shivambu.
As of 16:30, the ANC and DA both have 28 seats in the City of Johannesburg. The IEC has finalised 66% of the votes in the metro. ActionSA is currently third and vowed not to enter a coalition with the ruling party. Nationally, nearly 80 percent of the vote has been finalised and the competition is stiff six of the nation’s metros.
John Steenhuisen said the DA hopes to start coalition negotiations soon. It will require its partners to sign an agreement that will be made public. Steenhuisen is adamant that the party will not get into bed with the EFF.
There are now 14 hung councils in the Western Cape in the 2021 Local Government Elections. In 2016 only eight councils did not have an outright majority.
As of 7:24 on Wednesday, 64 percent of results had been finalised by the IEC. The ANC is on course to finish an election with less than 50% of the vote across South Africa.
The IEC said 55 percent of the votes have been counted. It is aiming to finalise 90 percent of the vote Tuesday, 2 November.
The City of Cape Town and Buffalo City Metro municipalities appear to be a done deal while Gauteng’s three metros are uncertain. ActionSA and the Cape Coloured Congress are two of the smaller parties making a mark in the big city elections thus far.
