Benni McCarthy’s future at Manchester United has become the subject of speculation over the last few months.

This uncertainty has seen links to Kaizer Chiefs return for McCarthy, who himself fuelled the fire on live radio.

McCarthy joined his dream club Manchester United at the beginning of the 2022/23 season. This was through the recommendation of current manager Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman instructed the club that he was in need of a forwards coach, and the club started taking cv’s. In the end, it would be Bafana Bafana’s all time leading goal scorer who got the gig.

Options in the USA?

McCarthy has endeared himself to the players at Manchester United, with the squad seemingly warming to him. He is often pictured warmly embracing the players at training and on match day. He has also been credited with helping players improve in front of goal, noticeably Marcus Rashford and Scott Mctominay. But that may not be enough, as his contract expires at the end of the month, with no renewal talks in sight. Many believe that is why he seemed to be flirting with the Chiefs job.

But now, according to Soccer-Laduma, the Chiefs job might not be the only option McCarthy could be eyeing. They believe something could soon be on the table in Major League Soccer!

“With McCarthy believed to be close to the exit door at United, the 46-year-old is understood to be weighing up his options with the MLS an avenue he is willing to explore. South Africa already has a growing contingent currently represented in the league from a players’ perspective with Njabulo Blom (St Louis City), Cassius Mailula (FC Toronto), Katlego Ntshabeleng (FC Dallas), Bongokuhle Hlongwane (Minnesota FC) and Olwethu Makhanya (Philadelphia Union). From a coach’s perspective, Bradley Carnell is hoisting the flag up high with St Louis City. McCarthy is understood to have caught the eye of one or two teams, though it remains to be seen what comes of the interest. The next few weeks are set to be interesting for the former Cape Town City mentor’s future and where he will next take his talents.” Wrote the publication.

Chiefs unlikely for McCarthy

It now remains to be seen if McCarthy will stay at United or go to the MLS. One thing seems certain right now, Chiefs seem to have decided on Nasreddine Nabi as their next coach!
