Weather warning: Damaging winds and waves in KwaZulu-Natal

The South African Weather Service has warned residents about damaging winds and waves expected in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds in KwaZulu-Natal.

The warning was issued on Sunday, 9 July and is valid until Monday, 10 July at 23:00.

DAMAGING WINDS EXPECTED IN KZN

The weather service said the passage of a cold front is expected to result in damaging winds along the KwaZulu-Natal coast on Monday.

The winds are expected to be accompanied by damaging waves.

“Winds are expected to be a southerly to south-westerly direction and reach approximately 35-45KT. Waves are expected to reach heights ranging between 4.5 – 5.5m,” the weather service said.

POSSIBLE IMPACTS

  • Localised disruption of small harbours and/or ports for a short period of time.
  • Small vessels at risk of taking water and capsizing in a locality.
  • Difficulty in navigation of small vessels.

SAWS had also issued a weather warning, predicting disruptive rain and localised flooding in parts of uMkhanyakude and Cetshwayo district municipalities on Monday, 10 July. 

According to the weather service, communities in Big Five Hlabisa, Hluhluwe, Mtubatuba, Umhlabuyalingana District, uMhlathuze, and uMlalazi Local Municipality may be affected. 

Scattered showers and thundershowers are expected over the east of KZN on Sunday and Monday, 11 July.  Some areas around uMkhanyakude and King Cetshwayo are expected to receive significant amounts of rain tomorrow, potentially leading to localised flooding.
