Liberation icon Motsoko Pheko to receive special provincial official funeral

Ernest “Motsoko” Pheko, a revered veteran of the liberation struggle and former President of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), is set to be honored with a Special Provincial Official Funeral, announced the Gauteng provincial government on Friday.

The passing of Pheko on 19 April at the age of 93 prompted Premier Panyaza Lesufi to request President Cyril Ramaphosa designate the funeral as such, reflecting the profound impact of his life’s work.

“President Cyril Ramaphosa has designated the funeral of Motsoko Pheko as a Special Provincial Official Funeral. The designation of the funeral follows a request from Premier Panyaza Lesufi to the President,” affirmed the Gauteng provincial government in a statement according to SA News.

Remembered for his unwavering commitment to the struggle for a liberated South Africa, Pheko’s legacy as a true Pan Africanist continues to inspire generations.

Furthermore, Premier Lesufi emphasised, “We will remember this son of the soil as a true Pan African to the end of his life. His teachings through his writings will continue to inspire us to move forward in improving the lives of all South Africans.”

Following the advent of democracy, Pheko served as a Member of Parliament for ten years, contributing significantly to various portfolio committees, notably in Foreign Affairs and Safety and Security. Additionally, he represented the PAC at the United Nations, advocating for justice and equality on the global stage.

Expressing his condolences, President Cyril Ramaphosa stated, “As we observe 30 Years of Freedom, we honour all individuals and political traditions who brought about the dispensation in which we live today and to whom we remain indebted.

“May Motsoko Pheko rest in peace.”
