Cats often get insect stings while playing around especially since bugs can be tempting prey to cats.

If your cat gets too close to a bee, it may get stung, especially if they are playful and curious.

In most cases, cats can recover from a bee sting with minor first aid and heal on their own.

However, it’s important to note that some cats may have severe allergic reactions that can be life-threatening.

Signs your cat has a bee sting

Cats have a tendency to hide their pain, so it may not be immediately apparent if they have been stung by a bee.

Bee stings are more common in younger cats and cats that go outdoors, but they can occur both inside and outside and affect cats of all ages.

To identify a bee sting;

  • Sudden discomfort in the cat
  • Your cat limping, pawing, or scratching at the sting area.
  • Small swollen bump at the location where the sting occurred.

What to do after seeing the signs

As soon as you notice your cat has been stung, remove them from the area.

Find a safe place to assess them and render first aid.

Serious reactions usually occur when a cat is stung multiple times, so it’s smart to act fast.

To remove the stinger, use a flat object like the edge of a driver’s license or credit card to gently scrape it out.

Do NOT use tweezers, as they can crush the venom sac and make the sting worse.

After removing the stinger, check your cat’s fur for any other insect stings and keep an eye on their symptoms.

If your cat has a minor swelling, you can apply a cold compress using an ice pack, or a cold towel to the affected area.

This will help reduce swelling and provide pain relief.

In most cases, veterinary care is not necessary for a bee sting.

If your cat has been stung multiple times or if the sting occurred inside their mouth, it’s recommended to visit a vet.
