Sweet and sour chicken: Roasted perfection for the whole family

When you want a tasty family meal this week, you can’t go wrong with sweet and sour chicken. It’s a classic roasted chicken recipe with a sweet twist.

When you want a cozy night in with he family, you want to enjoy it with some great food. Roast chicken is a popular family meal and there are many different variation. Our sweet and sour chicken uses popular South African flavours to create something tasty. Apricot jam is popular in South African cooking, especailly in the Western Cape region. It’s a sweet and zesty twist on a classic family meal.

Sweet and sour chicken suggestions

You can keep the chicken covered for the first hour before removing the foil and then crisping the chicken skin. You can also fill the casserole dish with roated vegetables or cook them separately. Also, you can make enough sauce to have as a bit extra to pour over the top of the juicy chicken pieces. Serve with roasted vegetables and some wild rice for the best results.

Ingredients

  • 8-10 8-10 chicken pieces

  • 1 packet 1 brown onion soup

  • ½ cup ½ water

  • 2 tbsp 2 mayonnaise

  • 2 tbsp 2 apricot jam

  • 2 tbsp 2 peach chutney

Method

  • Preheat oven to 180°C.
  • Mix the soup powder and water before mixing the mayonnaise, jam and chutney.
  • Pour the sauce over the chicken pieces.
  • Bake in a 180°C for 1½ hours.
