Have you ever been to a hosted game day party and wanted snacks and thought that you could do better? Well, you can now with this great homemade chicken nugget recipe. It isn’t the chicken nuggets that have been in the news recently because it uses real chicken. The recipe is easily adjustable so that you can make a big batch if you have lots of people coming over.

Making your homemade chicken nuggets

These chicken nuggets aren’t pureed but cubes of tasty, tender chicken coated in your choice of crumb even though the recipe uses bread crumbs. We do suggest Southern-fried crumbs or panko crumbs as they are finer and stick better with the egg wash and flour. Serve with your choice of condiments like tomato sauce, mustard or mayo dips like a tasty garlic and herb dip. You can even make them in an air fryer for at least 10-15 minutes.

The only chicken nugget recipe you will ever need.

Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 cup milk

  • 2 cups chicken breasts cut into one inch chunks

  • ¾ cup flour

  • ¾ cup breadcrumbs (or Southern-style coating)

  • 2 tbsp sugar

  • 2 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp chicken spice

  • 1 tsp chilli powder or paprika

  • 6-8cm oil to fry

Method

  • Use a rolling pin to make the breadcrumbs fine. Alternatively, you can use a food processor. If you are using Southern Fry coating you can skip this step.
  • In a bowl beat your eggs with your milk and place your chicken chunks in the bowl. Place this mixture in the fridge for 5-10 minutes.
  • Mix your flour, breadcrumbs, spices, sugar and salt together, remove the mixture from the fridge and cover your nuggets with the flour mixture. Place it on a tray and in the fridge for 5 minutes.
  • While the mixture is in the fridge heat your oil on the stove. It needs to be hot enough so when one piece is dropped in it bubbles but doesn’t burn! Fry it in batches so that they all don’t stick together. Fry the nuggets for about 6-8 minutes. This really depends on the pan you are using and the heat of the stove, you want the chicken pieces to be golden brown. Don’t fry for too long or the chicken will dry out.
  • Have another tray out with a paper towel placed on it to drain the oil from the nuggets.
  • Serve just as is or with chips, veggies and sauce of your choice.
