At the recent Transport Summit on Universal Accessibility, President Cyril Ramaphosa underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring transportation accessibility for all, including individuals with disabilities, articulating a vision of an inclusive South Africa.

“The goal of a universally accessible national transport system is not only within reach. It is also a vital part of our efforts to build a South Africa that truly belongs to all who live in it,” stated President Ramaphosa.

Urban planning transformed: Integrated transport boosts accessibility

Municipalities are rolling out integrated public transport programs to transform urban planning and enhance accessibility.

“The Public Transport Network Grant is one of the mechanisms being used to promote the implementation of universal design and universal access,” remarked President Ramaphosa.

Despite existing legislation, President Ramaphosa acknowledged the ongoing need for further action to achieve full accessibility in the national transport system.

Additionally, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa has developed a universal access policy with defined norms and standards, committing to making trains easily accessible and ensuring level station platforms.

President Ramaphosa stressed the importance of designing future infrastructure with usability considerations from the outset rather than retrofitting later. He highlighted efforts by the Airports Company South Africa to improve accessibility across its facilities, including designated parking spaces, assisted passenger lounges, and designated private search facilities at security gates.

In the maritime sector, industry partners and state-owned entities are collaborating to improve universal accessibility across various aspects, from inland waterways to ports and sailing clubs.

Ramaphosa urges integration of technology in transportation planning

Furthermore, President Ramaphosa addressed the impact of emerging technologies and new business models on transportation, emphasising the need for collaboration with service providers to integrate these innovations into planning processes.

He also emphasised the need to address accessibility issues within established systems, including the taxi industry, which serves as the primary mode of public transport for 70 percent of the South African population.
