The family of late actor Mpho Sebeng has announced his memorial service details.

The 31-year-old Savage Beauty star lost his life in a car accident in Potchefstroom on Sunday, 5 May.

Sebeng’s life will be honoured in a memorial service on Thursday, 9 May, at the Joburg Theatre at 16:00.

Details of Sebeng’s funeral service will be announced soon.

Fellow actor and Sebeng’s close friend, Zola Hashatsi, told The Citizen on Sunday that the actor was his family’s pride.

“It is a difficult time for the family right now. Of course, this is still fresh.

“They loved him very much and were proud of him,” he explained.

Hashatsi revealed that the tragedy came as friends were getting ready to celebrate Sebeng’s purchase of a new apartment in Randburg.

“He was a great colleague. When he came to Craze I knew this was someone who was absolutely talented and never saw himself as above anyone else. He was great at what he did.

“I was six years older than him. I was not only his friend, I was his older brother.”

Sebeng had been in the acting industry for almost 20 years. His first television debut was on Justice For All as well as Zero Tolerance, which later went to win multiple awards. He further got roles on Bay of Plenty, eTV’s Scandal and The Throne.

While in high school, he received his most prominent role on Winnie (the story about the life of the late Winnie Mandela), where he played Tsietsi and got to meet box office actors Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard.

Ring of Lies was the late actor’s first major lead role on prime-time television. His performance earned him a nomination at the 2018 South African Film & Television Awards for “Best Male Actor” in a telenovela.

Sebeng has also had acting roles on Netflix shows Collision, Savage Beauty and Miseducation. On Showmax he starred in films Tshepo and The Jakes Are Missing.

In a statement shared on social media, the Sebeng family requested for some space to deal with the heartbreaking news.

“The family of the South Africa entertainer, Mpho Sebeng are saddened to confirm, to the public and media that their son has indeed passed away.

“Mpho met his untimely death in the early hours of Sunday, 05 May 2024 due to a tragic car accident in Potchefstroom.

“Whilst the family appreciates the immense outpouring of love and condolences, the family requests some space to process the news.

“We request that you continue to hold the Sebeng family in prayer. Take care of yourselves and take care of each other,” read the statement.
