Where Josie Goes enjoys a picnic at Jan Harmsgat Country Estate

Just outside the red flower-lined streets of picturesque Robertson is a place that’s truly seen a renaissance which captures its rich past. Jan Harmsgat Guest House is a grand old dame, cleverly veiling some of her best-keep secrets, just a little off South Africa’s famed Route 62.

Weekend road trip, anyone?

The farm history dates back to 1723 and as if that’s not impressive enough, if pomegranates are the fruit of the gods – this must certainly be an earthly offering of heaven. Exporting more than 850 tonnes a year, a safari-style farm drive around the 625ha of seemingly ever-stretching views, proudly boasts some of our country’s most fertile lands.

When Jan Harmsgat is not perfecting its wine offering, they’re harvesting more than seven varietals of pomegranate, making pomegranate honey to supply a demand they can’t keep up with, and litres of the 100% natural pomegranate juice that the health world is lapping up for its incredible antioxidant properties.

The glorification of a slower pace of life

It could be something to do with the slower pace of life that’s encouraged here, the fact that locals love it and are catered for in clever additions to the event calendar line up, such as “local night”- where your ribs come complete with a complementary “bib” and local musicians for background entertainment.

Pecan nut trees line the picturesque gardens and encourage the sense of tranquility that Jan Harmsgat has become renowned for. Dining al-fresco at this luxurious old country lodge also means your First World problems extend only to the choice between tree canopy cover or vineyard view.

Overberg authenticity awaits

Old-world luxury and an unsurpassed opportunity to indulge in an authentic country ambiance are all part of the package here and this summer, there’s not much that’s not on offer.

From the upcoming hands-on harvest festival to neighbouring farms that offer up the opportunity to play bee-keeper for a day and bottle your own honey or a friendly Tannie, who’s behind a preserve master-class, are just some the ways you can ensure the whole family is kept happy and entertained.

The Overberg warmth of hospitality extends way past the accommodation offering at Jan Harmsgat, catering for all budgets with classic quarters, superior and executive suites and even a family villa option.

Less than a two-hour drive from Cape Town, be prepared to be transported back to another era where open space, country charm, and your comfort reign supreme.

Whether you’re looking to escape the city noise for a weekend or would just prefer to take a day trip and lose track of time whilst indulging in hearty, wholesome meals on the terrace, sipping on their brand new and first-ever MCC – this is a place that truly welcomes all.

Scenic drives aplenty

This summer, the fun extends to the Backlands Farm Tour, where day and overnight guests are able to enjoy a sunset picnic, Landrover farm drive and wine tasting in the countryside while overlooking the seemingly ever-stretching valley views.

For those needing to work off their hearty lunch, close off the perfect weekend with a scenic drive, walk or cycle through the surrounding Winelands, as you explore the neighbouring nature reserves, hiking trails and quintessential SA roadside stalls.

We assure you, there’s a very good reason that the supremely scenic Route 62, stretching between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn, has been named as one of the world’s best road trip destinations. Come find out why for yourself…happy weekend adventuring!
