We’ve been getting a steady stream of free games from the Epic store; some acclaimed masterpieces while others miss the mark a bit. This week up for grabs is Fez, a 2D game about a 2D character in a 2D world.

Last week’s free offerings were Hyper Light Drifter and Mutant Year Zero. Personally, Mutant Year Zero was the best of the bunch. If you love a game that packs a punch, I’d suggest downloading before it’s too late.

Furthermore, it has a talking duck with a potty mouth. Who doesn’t want a talking duck with a potty mouth? Mutant Year Zero and Hyper Light Drifter are still available for a few hours; Fez will be added during the course of the day.

Available from Epic Games – 22 to 29 August

Fez

Fez – developed and published by Polytron Corporation, Inc back in 2013 – is a Puzzle game. The single-player adventure follows Gomez, a 2D character who goes on a journey through space and time.

When the existence of a mysterious 3rd dimension is revealed to him, Gomez sets out on his journey; using the player’s ability to navigate 3D structures from 4 distinct classic 2D perspectives.

The minimum requirements for playing Fez is Windows XP SP3, although it’s recommended for Windows 7 version 1.12 or later. An Intel Core 2 Duo will do the trick, but ideally you’d want a nVidia GeForce GT 240 or better.

Epic Games is for PC games solely, but Fez can also be purchased from Steam, and is available on PlayStation and Xbox as well. Don’t underestimate the game.

It was the winner of the Audience Choice Award at the Fantastic Arcade in 2011, as well as the winner of the Seumas McNally Grand Prize at the Independent Games Festival in 2012, among many other awards.
