It has been a tough couple of weeks for Mosimane, who despite his achievements at Al Ahli, never seemed to be appreciated by the club.

On the night of Al Ahli’s promotion, club president Walid Moaz stated that “Pitso Mosimane performed well with the team, but the ambition is greater”. That hardly sounding like a vote of confidence in the man who just secured promotion for your club. On top of that, late last week this publication that they were actively in talks with Jose Mourinho to take the club into a new era of superstar signings.

Now even before he had parted ways with Al Ahli, there were cries from Chiefs fans begging their management to approach Mosimane to come and rescue their dire situation. Of course, with the calibre of coach he is, with all his achievements, it is only natural that this would be an extremely difficult move for Amakhosi to pull off, but would it be an impossible one? Here are some of the reasons he might just say yes if the club came calling.

  1. Mosimane is in his ‘Projects era’

Speaking to Soccer-Laduma, recently Mosimane’s wife and agent Moria Tlhagale confirmed that, more than anything else, the coach is attracted to projects. She then highlighted the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns, Al Ahly and Al Ahli were all projects when he took over. He started the unstoppable Sundowns era, won Al Ahli’s first CAF Champions League in seven years and then promoted Al Ahli back to the topflight. Now, if there is one club that screams ‘project’ in South Africa at the moment, it is Chiefs. The Soweto giants have not won any piece of silverware in eight years, and much like Al Ahli, can probably be regarded as a sleeping giant. Bringing back the country’s Glamour Boys back to the top should definitely be an attractive proposition to the former Bafana Bafana coach.

2. Mosimane has good relationship with Chiefs.

This has not always been the case, however, as most will remember that some of his most memorable moments in Sundowns colours, came during the era of their heated rivalry with Chiefs. The two sides were, at a point, the ones competing for the title in the Chiefs-Stuart Baxter era and then the one season under Ernst Middendorp. After moving to Egypt, the respect towards  Amakhosi has always been shown by Mosimane, with the club reciprocating it by allowing Al Ahly to use their training facilities ahead of their game against Sundowns two seasons ago. He has often been very complimentary towards the club. That, could bode well for the Soweto giants in an attempt to try and bridge the gap in negotiations for Mosimane, and help lured him to the club.

3. Mosimane is a boyhood Chiefs fan!

Having played or coached almost all of Chiefs’ rivals, and inflicted so much damage on them over the years, one would swear that Mosimane hates the club. However, it is the complete opposite, as throughout all of that, he has always been open about how he grew up as a fan of the club. As is often the case, a lot of players end up having to settle for rival clubs which always fuels their desire to want to prove a point against the club they really love. Having played at Orlando Pirates, played and coached at Sundowns, beaten Chiefs in cup finals at SuperSport United and Al Ahli, Mosimane, has proven enough points. It might now be time for him to “come home” and fulfil a lingering desire to finally represent his boyhood club one way or another.
