Former Kaizer Chiefs defender David Kannemeyer believes the club’s problems are ‘bigger than football’.

Speaking to Soccer Laduma, Kannemeyer also highlighted the fact that Amakhosi didn’t have one play representing Bafana Bafana at this year’s African Cup of Nations.

Despite frequent coaching changes, Kaizer Chiefs have not won a single trophy in nine years.

“There is no way a team like Chiefs can stay that long without winning a trophy! That’s not good for the club,” Kannemeyer told Soccer Laduma.

“There is no hope if things are like that. I said it early last year and I am saying it now, there are problems at the club and those problems are bigger than football. How come in the last nine years or so they haven’t won a trophy?

David Kannemeyer questions Kaizer Chiefs

“Does no one see a problem there?” he questioned.

Having sacked Molefi Ntseki in October, Kaizer Chefs have gone on to win three games in a row during December, and under interim coach Cavin Johnson, the club seems to be moving in the right direction.

Having no players involved in the Afcon games could be an advantage but Kannemeyer says it shows the lack of quality at the club

“There is no Kaizer Chiefs player in the national team at Afcon. What does that tell you as a journalist? That just shows and tells you that there is no quality at the club. What happened to recruiting quality players who can bring value to the team? Do you see the problems I was telling you about? There are bigger problems at Chiefs. You need to have quality players in the national team,” he concluded.
