Cape Town Spurs take stand against Sundowns in youth talent

Cape Town Spurs draw the line as they issue a cease and desist notice to Mamelodi Sundowns over the alleged poaching of young talents.

Cape Town Spurs recently took decisive action to safeguard their emerging talents. By issuing a cease and desist notice to Mamelodi Sundowns scouts. The Mother City team expressed concerns about the recurrent poaching of promising players. From their Ikamva development academy, a trend they find detrimental to their interests.

In a letter addressed to Sundowns, Cape Town Spurs voiced their apprehension. About the increasing frequency with which the reigning DStv Premiership champions recruit from Ikamva. The recent signing of six rising stars, including Zeke Felix, Anothando Menemene, Junaid Seedat, Selwyn Junior, Xavier Jodamus, and Liam Marthinus. Stirred dissatisfaction within the Spurs hierarchy. Shortly after joining the club, the players prominently featured themselves donning Sundowns kit.

Spurs expressed their concern about Sundowns scouting

The letter stated, “It is with great concern to note that Ikamva has recently become the hunting ground for Mamelodi Sundowns FC,” according to SABC Sport .  

In response to this, Cape Town Spurs announced a ban on Sundowns from their premises. Signalling potential strain in the relationship between the two clubs.

Highlighting Sundowns’ strategy to reinforce their youth structures. The letter called out specific staff members, including Tera Maliwa, and prohibited them from entering Spurs’ facilities. The club expressed disappointment at Sundowns’ failure to communicate their interest in the players, stating, “We have no choice but to bring to their attention that their staff…are prohibited from entering our premises and are no longer welcome.”

Additionally, Cape Town Spurs accused Sundowns of collaborating with agents to facilitate player transfers to Tshwane. The club took a firm stance against these agents, barring them from Ikamva. Despite Sundowns’ esteemed reputation, Spurs lamented the lack of communication when expressing their concerns two months ago and reiterated after the recruitment of 12-year-old Hlumile Tshaka.

In conclusion, the club emphasised the shift in Sundowns’ behaviour, stating, “This is not the same Sundowns we have become accustomed to work with over the years. The Sky is the limit! The Sky is not at Ikamva!” This bold move by Cape Town Spurs signifies their commitment to protecting their young talents from being poached by their rivals.
