Bongokuhle Hlongwane

The Minnesota United forward has bagged six goals in 21 MLS appearances this term, and the 23-year-old former Maritzburg star is a key player for the team under coach Adrian Heath. This is good news for Bafana Bafana and for him personally.

Njabulo Blom

Kaizer Chiefs saw a talented academy star leave the club earlier this year, and he’s thriving for St Louis City. In their maiden campaign and under South African manager Bradley Carnell, they sit atop the Western Conference standings. Blom was initially in and out of the side, but now he’s started their last six matches. His influence is growing at the base of their midfield.

Katlego Ntsabaleng

The 25-year-old Benoni-born star, known as “Tsiki”, is at Dallas FC and excelling in a wide midfield role.

Makhanya and Mailula to join the MLS soon

19-year-old Stellenbosch defender Olwethu Makhanya is on the brink of joining Philadelphia Union. Meanwhile, 22-year-old Sundowns and Bafana striker Cassius Mailula will be a Toronto FC player if and when the clubs agree a fee for the talented marksman. It’s believed that fee could be in the region of R30 million.

Jomo Sono, an Mzansi great, was a pioneering presence as far as South Africans in the USA are concerned. Historically, the MLS has been rather kind to South African stars and been home to some of Mzansi’s finest ever footballers.
