Billiat’s contract at Chiefs expired at the end of June, with the club confirming that they had offered him a new deal.

Chiefs’ communications officer Vina Maphosa then claimed that Billiat told the club he was sick, then disappeared never to be seen again at the club. This happened while there was still a deal on the table for the player, and just before they embarked on their journey to Polokwane for pre-season. The club then wrote an official statement detailing that the player has disappeared and not given an indication of whether or not he will sign.

Maphosa would then go on to clarify on a radio interview that, the player was not AWOL, as he was not obligated to return to Chiefs after his contract had expired. He added that the club were just worried about Billiat’s whereabouts as they viewed him as an important player to the team. As it stands, however, it looks like there is very little chance the former Zimbabwean international will be seen in Amakhosi’s gold and black strip, with his number 11 jersey seemingly being handed to new signing Tebogo Potsane.

Now according to Soccer-Laduma, one of the primary reasons Billiat left Chiefs hanging was because of the amount his salary was being cut by.

Chiefs offered Billiat a 60% pay cut?

“Now the latest news reaching the Siya crew’s desk is that Amakhosi had offered Billiat a new deal that included a pay cut of 60%!. Given that the 32-year-old was on a reported R500 000 salary per month, it means his salary would’ve been slashed to R200 000 per month.”

It is now clear that Billiat saw a reduction of R300 000 to his monthly salary as too much, and has subsequently left the club. It now remains to be seen where he could get a salary anywhere near that amount at his age and after a few injury riddled seasons.
