Bidvest Wits’ hunt for a second PSL title suffered a setback, as they were held to a 1-1 draw against Supersport United at Mbombela Stadium.

The Students went into a clash as just one of only four teams remaining in the title race, with their opponents having dropped out of the pursuit in the previous round of fixtures.

The action pretty much kicked off with Rownen Williams called upon early as he had to make a save from a Gabadhino Mhango effort in the second minute.

The Bafana shot-stopper’s opposite number Richard Goss was aalso not having a quiet evening, with Bradley Grobler also forcing a save from him in the opening exchanges.

There would be no change to the scoreline at the half-hour mark, and it was eight minutes after when Bidvest Wits made the breakthrough through Sifiso Hlanti, who followed through from a rebound off a Williams’ save to put the visitors in front.

It was 1-0 to the visitors going into the break, but that lead was short-lived as another defender wrote his name into the scoresheet.

Just a minute into the second half, Clayton Daniels connected with an Aubrey Modiba set piece to level matters.

Supersport’s quest for the winner was made complicated by the loss of captain Dean Furman who, after earning a booking, received his matching orders for dissent.

That was not to be the end of the controversy as, just four minutes away from time when Terrence Dzvukamanja found the back of the net – but his effort was disallowed – ruled to not have crossed the line, despite replays cclearly showing that it was a legitimate goal.

The contest descended into ugly sciences following the final whistle, with aggrieved players mobbing referee Phelelani Ndaba, as Wits remain five points from the table-topping Orlando Pirates.
