Mamelodi Sundowns: New transfer window, new foreign quota conundrum!

Mamelodi Sundowns have the same problem in almost every winter transfer window, and things are not different this time around.

The Brazilians have just added two foreign internationals in Junior Mendieta and Lucas Ribeiro in addition to the five they already had last season.

There are also Divine Lunga and Etiosa Ighodaro who spent last season on loan at Golden Arrows and Chippa United respectively.

The five that were there last season were Abdelmounaim Boutouil, Abubeker Nasir, Erwin Saavedra, Marcelo Allende and Gaston Sirino.

And Sundowns now need to sacrifice no fewer than three of their foreign internationals to make way for both Mendieta and Ribeiro.

Sirino and Lunga are sorted because they qualify for the South African citizenship having spent the last five years in the country.

This leaves Sundowns with Boutouil, Nasir, Saavedra, Allende and Ighodaro – and that’s already five foreign internationals – meaning two must go.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS FACE ANOTHER FOREIGN QUOTA CONUNDRUM

As things stand, Ighodaro looks set for another loan move while Sundowns are undecided on Saavedra and Nasir.

The two players – Saavedra and Nasir – didn’t really show up for Sundowns last season due to long-term injuries.

And indications are that they could be let go with Saavedra leaving on a permanent basis while a loan move could be on the cards for Nasir.

Should the duo indeed leave, Sundowns would have one free space to sign another foreign international reported to be Everton Moraes.
