Kekana has seemingly been phased out by the technical team as he is yet to feature this season, and this after reports of him possibly leaving before 31 August 2021 surfaced.

Nonetheless, Kekana, who is in his 11th year with Sundowns, remained but he’s nowhere to be seen with the first team despite being the club’s captain.

Now, Mokwena revealed that Sundowns and everyone associated with them love Kekana but said the club will release a statement on the midfielder’s situation and future.

“We love him. The club loves him. The fans love him. And I think the club will make a statement in due course,” said Mokwena in an interview with SAFM.

“Because [he is a] proverbial winner. Really, a person that loves the game, has sacrificed so much for the game and has given so much to Mamelodi Sundowns.

“In that right, he deserves a lot of respect and honour which I am sure Mamelodi Sundowns will give the due diligence that he actually deserves,” added Mokwena.

Asked if the technical team sees Kekana’s role in the current Sundowns team, Mokwena admitted that it was a difficult question to answer.

And that’s because talks are ongoing between Kekana and the club behind the scenes, and in addition, Mokwena said he would neither confirm nor deny the assumptions made around the situation.

“And those are ours, [and] for us to keep private. I’m not going to confirm or deny anything at this moment out of respect for the legend Hlompho is.
