Kaizer Chiefs have three credible options to take the gloves in their Nedbank Cup clash with TS Galaxy in the form of Itumeleng Khune, Daniel Akpeyi or Bruce Bvuma.

Khune has thrown his hat into the ring with a solid shift in goal for Warriors FC in the gimmicky DStv Compact Cup.

Should Khune get his Kaizer Chiefs chance

However, the nature of that tournament does diminish the shine inferred by Khune’s displays.

Daniel Akpeyi has now returned from the Africa Cup of Nations and has rejoined training at Naturena.

Akpeyi is the incumbent number one and is arguably the best choice for the regular starting berth, however, this is a cup fixture.

It is a staple of big clubs to use an alternate keeper in cup competitions especially in the early stages of a tournament.

Bvuma was in goal when Kaizer Chiefs faced TS Galaxy in Mbombela back in August and kept a clean sheet. It was a clean sheet achieved with just two saves though and Bvuma hasn’t seen much action this season.

Does Akpeyi deserve to keep his place

Akpeyi was the dominant force in goal for Kaizer Chiefs in the first half of the season.

The Nigerian stopper was in goal in Kaizer Chiefs’ most recent match, their 2-0 win over Maritzburg United in December. Akpeyi is not guaranteed his place though.

Akpeyi was on the bench for the entirety of Nigeria’s AFCON campaign so his national team duty will count for little in the decision.

As it stands, Khune is the man who has the most recent outing, which might give the veteran the inside track.

Khune’s last outing for Kaizer Chiefs came in their penalty shootout loss to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Khune in goal will be a treat for those who enjoy his trademark antics.

Stuart Baxter has to decide if he prioritises the further development of Bvuma, the match fitness of Akpeyi or the comeback of Khune.
