It’s goodbye to Chiefs striker after short-lived stay

Time appears to have run out on Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana’s stay at Kaizer Chiefs, which has been cut short after just one season.

Bimenyimana arrived at Chiefs with great expectations prior to the start of this season, and after scoring against SuperSport with a well-taken header and then recording a hat-trick from the penalty spot against Stellenbosch, it was felt that he could go on to reach great heights.

However, after battling with some injury troubles, the towering forward failed to get back to his best – and was once notably even booed by some spectators, who expressed their frustrations with his performance in the second half in particular against Richards Bay back in March.

He mainly played off the bench during the latter parts of the season as he fell out of favour, and various reports in recent times have hinted that he could be one of the players facing the exit door.

Bimenyimana obviously offers a foreigner spot in the Chiefs ranks, and so that could have been a factor as the club does look to prematurely offload the 25-year-old.

According to Goal.com, the Burundi international – who initially signed a two-year deal with a further one-year option – will have his contract prematurely cut short despite actually finishing the league season as Chiefs’ top scorer.

“Chiefs want to terminate the Bonfils’ contract,” a source told GOAL. “They have approached his representatives and the two parties are now discussing his settlement fee.”

The towering striker seems to have struggled with the pressure of playing for Amakhosi at times

Earlier this season, the player’s representative Rui Frois admitted that they were working to ensure he received the support needed to ensure he isn’t affected negatively by the building pressure.

“As the player’s representative we have made it our duty to make sure that the boy is not destroyed by all this negativity,” Frois told KickOff.

“His goals have helped Chiefs get to where they are now, and he will bring smiles again. It is unfortunate that some people feed on negativity instead of being positive. Why want to victimise your top goal scorer who is only in his first season at the club and has helped the team the most with his goals?

“Why should you be wanting to bring down the morale of the player? Luckily, the boy has already realised that he needs to stand strong, and we have engaged former players like Jomo Sono and Collins Mbesuma to offer guidance and motivation through these trying times.”
