Former Bafana Bafana captain Bongani Khumalo has confirmed he has quit football permanently at the age of 34.

Former Bafana Bafana captain Bongani Khumalo has confirmed he has quit football permanently at the age of 34.

Khumalo was most recently on the books of SuperSport United; the team he played for and won the league with before moving abroad in 2010.

In an interivew with Soccer Laduma, Khumalo revealed that he’s no longer going to football trainings as his focus is now on playing golf and keeping an eye on his investments.

“Yeah, I’m done. I’ve retired,” said Khumalo.

“I know I said I would have liked to play one more year but playing one more year, I know exactly where I would have been if I kept on playing and it’s the inevitable.

“Look football is going to end. Its going to end for everyone and for me, obviously, it was either one more – or not,” he continued.

“So, after careful consideration, I thought I might as well call it time and start my life away from the game, which is, obviously, the rest of my life, really.

“So, it was just something in the heart where it felt like it was time to move on to other things,” explained Khumalo.

“My life is still the same. I just don’t go to football training anymore. I just do my own training in the gym, and I play golf now – that’s literally the only difference,” he confirmed.

Khumalo, though, didn’t completely rule out the possibility of returning to the game in a different capacity but, for now, he’s focusing other things away from football.

“In terms of my capacity in the game, only time will tell as to where I end up but for now you can call it a little bit of a hiatus,” added Khumalo.
