Desiree Ellis’ Banyana Banyana suffered a 2-1 defeat in their opening game against Sweden in the opening game of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Sunday morning.

Fans were not happy after the defeat which saw Sweden score a 90th minute winner.

Hildah Magaia opened the scoring for Banyana but Sweden managed to come back and win the game 2-1.

Fans take to social media to express their frustration with Ellis

The Banyana coach made late changes into the game and some football supporters feel that cost Banyana the victory or draw.

Fans want Ellis gone.

@Lifafanseka_10 wrote, “This Banyana Banyana loss is on Desiree Ellis and no one else. Poor tactics from the bench. We went flat after scoring. Sibulele Holweni (LB) was Sweeden’s free passage to goal, no spirit, fight or determination, just vibing nje. Next game start Noxolo Cesane or we riot.

“Also don’t know why our best GK Dlamini was benched, surely she would’ve done better. Nomvula Kgaole was running like she was carrying a bag of cement, you can’t play like that when you’re the heart of the team,” he wrote on Twitter.

@Ngizokhuluma felt the same about Ellis’ team selection. “Desiree Ellis and her selection cost us the game. I can’t be positive when defensive subs could have been made to protect the point but ke. Hai suka.”
