Chiefs offer Zwane update after latest disappointing loss

Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane was under fire in more ways than one after this past weekend’s loss to SuperSport United.

On Saturday, the Chiefs suffered a disappointing defeat to SuperSport United, which was their fourth loss out of their last five games in all competitions.

Yet there can be no excuses for the shocking behaviour from disgruntled spectators after the game at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, which saw ‘fans’ hurl objects at Zwane and some of the players as they walked off the pitch.

The Chiefs coach was thought to have been hit by a bottle and cut underneath the eye before he was quickly escorted by police.

However, it’s now been confirmed that Zwane was in fact hit in the face by the shield of the police as they tried to protect him as he made his way into the tunnel.

“I can confirm that the coach was injured after the game. He was hurt in the eye and received medical attention,” communications manager Vina  Maphosa said on Radio2000. “He wasn’t hit by the objects thrown by the fans but was injured by the shield of the police who was trying to protect him.

“The coach is recovering well and should be on the bench against City in our last game,” he added. “Even though he wasn’t hit by the objects, we have been able to identify three plain clothed supporters who threw the objects.”

Since that result, it’s been reported by SABC Sport that Chiefs are weighing up coaching changes after a season that has not lived up to expectations, and that has seen no trophies brought to Naturena.

The report suggests that high-ranking sources have suggested that the club will actively look for a replacement for Zwane as they weigh up whether to dramatically axe the head coach after just one season in the top job.

Apparently the backing that Zwane has enjoyed throughout an inconsistent season has now reached shaky grounds after a dramatic recent slump in form. Although a decision has reportedly not been formally made as yet, it’s believed that recent results have begun to change some of the thinking from club bosses.
