Football giants Kaizer Chiefs brag about its rugby team

The Amakhosi have boasted about being the only South African soccer club with an official rugby team in their ranks.

The Amakhosi are the most supported sports brand in South Africa, with fans who represent the various demographics of the ‘Rainbow Nation’ and now Kaizer Chiefs is the only South African football club with a Rugby 7’s side.

A little known South African sport fact is that Kaizer Chiefs is both a soccer and a rugby organisation. The Amakhosi have ventured into the abbreviated form of rugby and have on official sevens side, which is coached by former Springbok Gcobani Bobo.

AMAKHOSI RUGBY STATEMENT

In a statement released on the club’s official website, Chiefs said the rugby team was founded to help the club transcend boundaries across various sports.

“The Gold and Black have made history by fielding this team in previous rugby tournaments, transcending boundaries and breaking barriers between sporting codes and bringing people together,” read the Kaizer Chiefs statement.

“Players who have donned the colours of Kaizer Chiefs 7’s side were carefully selected by the Technical team and vetted by the coach, Gcobani Bobo. Kaizer Chiefs has put forward a strong team in previous outings to contest for the title with a competitive spirit in the camp, all the players wanting to prove themselves.

“It is indeed an honor for many of the Rugby players to wear the colours of the Amakhosi, the Gold and Black jersey and the badge of the might Amakhosi.”
