Zikalala praises 2023 bursary achievers

Zikalala commended 100 learners from the Class of 2023 who secured prestigious bursaries for built environment courses.

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Sihle Zikalala has recognised teachers and guardians as genuine heroes, expressing gratitude for their role in motivating and guiding learners (bursary achievers) during the 2023 matric examination.

In a ceremony held on Thursday, Zikalala commended 100 learners from the Class of 2023 who secured prestigious bursaries for built environment courses at various universities nationwide.

Addressing the bursary awardees, Zikalala emphasised their significance, stating, “You are the crown in the jewel; and today we sing your praises for demonstrating that paying attention and putting in effort pays.”

The Minister highlighted the recipients’ commitment and contribution to honoring the sacrifices made by the youth of 1976, who protested against an education system designed for racial subjugation.

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) has been offering these bursaries for a decade, addressing challenges in the skills pipeline and transformation within the Built Environment.

What did Zikalala say?

Zikalala stressed the critical role of the DPWI in delivering essential services, necessitating a highly skilled workforce.

The DPWI Bursary Scheme supports undergraduate studies in various fields, including Construction Project Management, Quantity Surveying, Engineering, and Actuarial Science. The Council for the Built Environment (CBE) has expressed concern about the slow transformation in the built environment, compounded by the departure of aging professionals.

To combat these challenges, the DPWI implements school and university bursary programs. Bursary beneficiaries receive financial support throughout their tertiary studies and participate in a 24-month internship program upon graduation.

What the Bursary covers?

The estimated budget per student is R177 500. With the department allocating R17 800 000 for the 2024 academic year intake. This comprehensive bursary covers tuition, accommodation, meals, textbooks, projects, excursions, and a monthly allowance. Ensuring a holistic support system for aspiring professionals in the built environment.
