In honor of National Police Day, SAPS launches a compassionate effort, raising funds to aid children of fallen officers.

In commemoration of this year’s National Police Day, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has undertaken a noble initiative by raising funds to support the children of police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The SAPS, in a statement, emphasised the sacrifices made by its officers, highlighting the crucial role they play in ensuring the safety of South African citizens.
Cabinet designated 27 January as National Police Day in 2005, a day set aside to honor and remember the dedicated men and women in blue.

Alarming drop: 140 police officers

Recent data reveals a significant loss of 140 police officers over the past four years, individuals who paid the ultimate price while serving and protecting the nation.

On 25 January 2024, more than 100 golf players from various corporate entities united in a fundraising effort for the South African Police Education Trust Fund (SAPSET). Remarkably, the event garnered an impressive R6.6 million rand, earmarked for the educational needs of the deceased officers’ children.

SAPSET currently supports children from Grade RR to tertiary education, having already assisted 1078 children, with 54 having graduated and 146 obtaining their National Senior Certificate.

Minister Bheki Cele words

Expressing gratitude, Police Minister General Bheki Cele emphasised the profound impact of these funds on the lives of bereaved children, hoping for increased corporate support in the future.

“These funds go a long way in making a meaningful difference in the lives of these children left behind. The least we can do is to ensure these children don’t carry the extra burden of stressing about school fees, books, and school uniforms knowing their educational needs have been taken care of.

“We hope more corporates and the overall business fraternity will in future come on board to support this cause,” said Cele.

National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola acknowledged the relentless efforts of police officers, urging communities to collaborate in combating crime and preventing further loss of officers’ lives.
