The South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating a case of kidnapping after a 28-year-old man was abducted by unknown men at a parking lot in Benoni, Johannesburg.

According to anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee, the victim is Moulana Tahseen, the son of Abdul Mateen, a local businessman.

Motive in Benoni kidnapping likely ransom

Abramjee has expressed concern over the rise in kidnappings in the country and reckons the motive behind Tahseen’s abduction is ransom.

“There is no doubt that we are seeing dramatic increases in kidnappings in South Africa. In neighbouring Mozambique, they still continue and it has been ongoing for a number of years. I think we have some major, dangerous, highly-skilled organised gangs at work, we are also finding more and more smaller, so-called copycat gangs trying their luck,” he told IOL.

The incident comes just days after the four Moti brothers, who had also been kidnapped, were reunited with their parents after three weeks. The boys – Zidan, Zayyad, Alaan, and Zia Moti – all aged between 6 -15, were abducted on their way to school in Polokwane at approximately 07:00 on Wednesday, 20 October 2021. Seven men with R5 rifles and handguns cornered their vehicle and forcefully removed them.

The boys were dropped off in Vuwani, about 160km away from their home.

“Last night, the police in Vuwani received a call from a local resident saying that the children arrived at their house saying they were dropped off on a nearby road. Police arranged a doctor who confirmed that the children are in good health before they were handed over to their parents. The children also appeared to be in high spirits during the reunion with their parents,” SAPS spokesperson Vish Naidoo said in a statement.
