A lion is on the loose and was spotted along the R511 near the Hennopstrail in Gauteng on Wednesday afternoon, 8 March 2023.

BEWARE, A LION IS LOOSE IN GAUTENG

According to Arthur Crewe of the Strategic Response Rescue Unit (SRU), the lion was spotted early on Wednesday morning.

“The lion was spotted around 02:00 by a security response officer on the R511 close to the Hennopstrail in Gauteng. We had a second sighting, so it is confirmed a lion,” says Crewe.

LION IS ON THE LOOSE ALONG THE R511 NEAR THE HENNOPSTRAIL

It is not known from where the animal escaped. It is suspected that it is from somewhere in Gauteng.

Crewe added that all needed services were on the scene searching for the lion around midday on Wednesday.

“The relevant conservation departments have been informed. Although it was spotted on the Gauteng side of the border, lions roam far,” Crewe said.

DEAD ANIMAL NOT LINKED TO THE LION

Crewe said they got a call that there was an animal that the lion had eaten. “We got a call that a lion had eaten this animal. Our vehicle went to look, and we found it was a pounced animal. This is why you will see the animal’s carcass,” said Crewe.

Crewe said it is unrelated to the lion that escaped, as people initially reported.

PUBLIC ADVISED TO STAY INDOORS WITH CHILDREN AND PETS

He advised the public in the vicinity to take precautionary steps by staying indoors with their children and pets. He said if anyone spots the lion, which is on the loose and was cited in the area of the R511 near the Hennopstrail, they should call for help.
