Cardiac arrest leads to fatal crash in Umhlanga

A male motorist was found severely entrapped in wreckage with critical injuries after he crashed his vehicle in Umhlanga.

A male motorist has died after his SUV was found to have crashed into a concrete support structure of an overhead bridge in Umhlanga, Durban on Monday. 

Paramedics responded to the M4 Ruth First Highway, south at the Lighthouse Road bridge.


Emer-G-Med said on arrival on scene an SUV was found to have crashed into the concrete support structure of the overhead bridge.

“A male motorist believed to be approximately forty years of age, was found severely entrapped in the wreckage with critical injuries. Advanced Life Support paramedics worked fervently to stabilise him whilst he was cut free using the Jaws-of-life.

“Reports from the scene are that the man went into a state of cardiac arrest shortly after he was extricated and despite extensive resuscitation efforts, he was declared dead on the scene.”



A hitchhiker, a 37-year-old woman, was killed when she attempted to cross the busy N2 in the vicinity of Sibaya Casino on Sunday.

According to Reaction Unit SA (RUSA) spokesperson Prem Balram, the fatal accident happened around 11:37 on Sunday.

“A 37-year-old woman was killed after she was run over while attempting to cross the N2 in the vicinity of Sibaya Casino – KZN on Sunday.

“Passing motorists contacted Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) at approximately 11:37 requesting assistance for the pedestrian,” Balram said.

Balram said earlier on Sunday morning that a man was seriously injured after being run over on the southbound lane of the R102 between Verulam & Ottawa – KZN.

“At approximately 07:48, a member of RUSA was on patrol when he noticed the man running back and forth on the busy road.

“Several vehicles avoided the jaywalker before a white VW Polo ran him over. He sustained serious injuries in the accident.”
