With the final matric results out, the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s(UKZN) Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine has the tough task of selecting its final 250 first-year students for the MBChB programme.
That number, however, is a drop in the ocean compared to the more than 12 000 first-year applications it received.
Similarly, according to the IOL, the institution has received 160 059 first-year applications. Still, despite the huge demand, it can only offer around 9 000 first-year places across all its programmes.

UKZN’s Executive Director of Corporate Relations, Normah Zondo, has appealed to applicants to be patient as firm offers are currently being made.
“Each applicant offered a place will be sent an SMS and an e-mail containing the link they can use to accept the offer from UKZN formally.”
Zondo emphasised that, as with previous years, no walk-ins will be permitted. Once an applicant receives as SMS, they will have up to 72 hours to respond before their place to reallocated to another student.
Registration will continue until 24 February 2024.
