The rollout was scheduled to commence on 15 November and has been moved to 4 December, said the entity.

“This is to allow for further community and councillor consultation and engagement which will be initiated after the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) voter registration weekend, taking place on 18 and 19 November 2023,” said Joburg Water.

Customer Interface Unit (CIU) REQUIRED BY JOBURG WATER

Meanwhile, Joburg Water has urged customers who have never received a Customer Interface Unit (CIU), or have lost it, that they should visit their nearest City of Johannesburg Customer Service Centre, where they will need to provide the following information: the property owner’s name and surname, physical address of the property, meter number and related contact details.

“The cost for replacing a lost CIU is R680.”

RESIDENTS WARNED AGAINST REFUSAL

Joburg Water has warned that the refusal to switch to prepaid smart meters will lead to Level 3 water cuts, and residents will then have to pay to be reconnected.

This is a developing story. An update will be published as and when new information is available.
