The R350 Social Relief Distress(SRD) grant from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is administered in terms of Section 32 of the Social Assistance Act, 2004 (Act No. 13 of 2004) and is implemented with the concurrence of the Minister of Finance.
The grant was introduced in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa to address the needs of the nation’s most vulnerable citizens. The grant has been extended a couple of times since its introduction, but the government seems insistent there is no future for the grant – in its current form – beyond 2024.
The SRD grant is meant for South African Citizens, Refugees, Asylum Seekers, and Special Permit holders between 18 and 60 years old. They must have insufficient means, do not receive social grants or are not contributing to or eligible for UIF payment, and have no financial support from any other source.
