As announced by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana when he delivered his Budget Speech in February, social grants across the board increased on 1 April 2023 and will increase again on 1 October 2023. How much are the increases?
SOCIAL GRANTS INCREASES FOR OCTOBER
As previously reported, Godongwana announced that R66 billion would be allocated to the Department of Social Development over the medium term, with R30 billion meant for “inflation-linked” increases in social grants, and R36 billion towards the extension of the R350 grant until 31 March 2024.

From 1 April, old age and disability grants increased by R90, which will be followed by an additional R10 increase on 1 October. In total, it will increase to R2090.
The child support grant increased by R20 on 1 April and will increase by an additional R10 in October to R510 while the foster care grant will increase by R60 to R1130.
Military veterans received a R2100 grant from 1 April, which will be increased by R10 in October.

ANC CALLS FOR R350 SRD GRANT TO BE INCREASED TO R1500
Meanwhile, African National Congress (ANC) Youth League president Collen Malatji has called on government to introduce a monthly grant of R4500 for unemployed graduates and for the R350 Social relief of Distress (SRD) grant to increase to 1500.
“We call upon the ANC-led government to introduce an unemployment grant. We’re saying while young people are still looking for opportunities there must be a grant that is provided for them to be able to move around and look for those opportunities. We are saying while we’re still looking for solutions the R350 SRD grant should be increased to R1500,” he said.
