Pay-tv giant Mnet has conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the family and friend of the popular face on the network, Derek Watts.

THE PASSING AWAY OF DEREK WATTS

Acclaimed investigative journalist Derek Watts passed away today, Tuesday, 22 August after a long battle with cancer.

Watts, an iconic anchor, was popularly known for his critical role in the investigative journalism programme Carte Blanche airing on Mnet every Sunday evening. While putting on a brave fight against the dreaded disease, Watts managed to remain relevant and take commercial gigs, the most remarkable being the Castle Lite television advert.

In a brief post, Mnet wrote:

“M-Net extends its heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and loved ones of the late, Derek Watts. We remember him as a dedicated investigative journalist and a longstanding presenter of Carte Blanche. His unwavering commitment to his work and his determination in the face of challenges were truly remarkable. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. May they find solace in the cherished memories they shared and may Derek’s legacy continue to inspire us all”.

“A true legend in the realm of broadcasting. He touched the lives of countless individuals with his extraordinary professional journey. As we reflect on the enduring impact he has made, our hearts and sincere sympathies go out to his loved ones during this very difficult time.”

THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER BY THE VETERAN BROADCASTER

Last month Watts opened up about his cancer battle and said he will not be returning to the show. 

In an interview, Derek said after 35 years of his time with the show, it is now over. He will not be returning. 

The 74-year-old Derek also revealed that he kept his cancer diagnosis secret for more than a year before being admitted to the hospital earlier this year. He was hospitalised with severe sepsis.
