KZN man (75) suffers burns as vehicle bursts into flames

A 75-year-old man’s vehicles was engulfed in flames while he was driving in Redcliffe, Verulam in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

A 75 year old man suffered burns to his hands and face after his vehicle burst into flames in Redcliffe, Verulam in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) on Friday, 18 March 2022.

The elderly male was reportedly  travelling on Redcliffe Drive in his Toyota Auris when he noticed smoke emanating from the engine compartment when he stopped to investigate.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) the car burst into flames as he opened the bonnet. A female ran to his assistance and pulled him away from the vehicle.

“Reaction Unit South Africa received multiple calls from residents reporting the fire. Reaction Officers were dispatched at approximately 16:14. On arrival, Officers discovered the vehicle completely engulfed in flames. Medics examined the driver who was found to have suffered superficial burns to his hands and face. The eThekwini Fire Department doused the fire on their arrival. The cause of the blaze was not established.

“According to the elderly male, he had purchased the vehicle two months ago.”

Meanwhile, on the same day, a 31-year-old man sustained moderate injuries after his vehicle overturned on the south bound lane of the R102 in the vicinity of the King Shaka International Airport, KZN intersection .

A member of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) was on patrol in the area when he came across the white Renault Kwid lying on its side.

“The two male occupants explained that they were traveling from Tongaat, KZN headed towards Phoenix, KZN when the driver lost control of the vehicle causing it to overturn and land on its side. RUSA Medics were immediately dispatched to the scene and on arrival treated the driver for moderate injuries before transporting him to hospital for further medical attention. The passenger was not injured in the accident.”
