Prison warden nabbed with drugs worth R1m in Emalahleni

A 37-year-old female prison warden was arrested for possession of drugs with a street value of R1 million in Emalahleni on Thursday.

Police said a 37-year-old female prison warden was arrested for possession of crystal meth, rock, and heroine with a street value of R1 million in Emalahleni on Thursday.

A SEARCH WAS CONDUCTED AT THE PRISON WARDEN’S HOUSE

Police spokesperson Selvy Mohlala said an undisclosed amount of money found in the house was also confiscated.

“Police conducted an intelligence-driven operation at a house inside Paxton prison premises in Emalahleni and found drugs to the street value of R1 million,” Mohlala said.

During the operation, the following drugs were found inside the house of the prison warden:

  • 249 kg of crystal meth
  • 9 half-moons of rocks
  • 1.5 kg of heroin
  • 3.2 grams of rocks

Mohlala furthermore said police also confiscated an undisclosed amount of money.

DID THE WARDEN SELL THE DRUGS TO PRISONERS?

Investigations are currently underway to establish whether the drugs were sold to prisoners or elsewhere outside the prison in Emalahleni.

The prison warden is expected to appear in the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 12th November 2021.

The Provincial Commissioner of Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has come out in appreciation and support of the joint efforts by the members who bravely executed their job without any fear or favor.

“As I have said before, no one will be treated better than the others. We are all equal before the law, and anyone found in contravention of the law would be arrested immediately,” she said.

The prison warden face charges of dealing drugs. The Department of Correctional Services has not yet provided a comment or more information regarding the arrest.
