The North West Department of Health has confirmed that a 51-year-old man committed suicide after he was discharged from the Joe Morolong Hospital.

The province’s department said it was left in utter bewilderment after the deceased had been set for an appointment to see a psychologist. The patient was admitted late on Tuesday before he took his own life on Wednesday.

“The North West Department of Health is astounded, saddened, and dismayed at learning of the sad news of a 51-year-old male patient from Dithakwaneng Village near Vryburg who took his own life,” the official statement said.

“The CEO of Joe Morolong Hospital confirmed this unfortunate incident of a discharged patient who committed suicide within the hospital premises.

“The patient was collected at the village by Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) on Tuesday at around 22H50 and admitted overnight. He was then referred to a psychologist yesterday and got discharged the same day having been given a follow-up appointment.

“Following his discharge, the patient was then discovered by a staff member hanging on the tree around the staff accommodation area at around 15H00 yesterday.”

After police and forensic services were gathered to the death scene, the hospital organised transport to gather the family before the devastating suicide news was delivered by the North West hospital.

“MEC Madoda Sambatha sends message of condolence to the family and assures them that they will also be offered psychological support,” the note concluded.
