Police: 57-year-old man caught with over 9000 child porn materials

A 57-year-old man from Witbank, Mpumalanga appeared before the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court after police found child pornography on his devices.

The police Mpumalanga arrested a man in Witbank after they received a tip-off from the community that he may be storing child pornographic material at his home. The suspect made his first appearance before the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 28 September.

POLICE RAID HOUSE AND FIND CHILD PORN

The 57-year-old suspect was charged with possession of child pornography and possession of an unlicensed firearm, according to South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli.

“According to a police report, the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) received information from members of the community about a suspect who was storing pornographic material in his place of residence,” said the police spokesperson.

A sting operation was conducted on Monday, 27 September, when police members followed up on the information. They searched the suspect’s premises and confiscated hard drives, laptops and tablets, that contained approximately 9000 child pornographic materials, including videos.

“Whilst proceeding with their search, the astute members discovered a revolver which the suspect failed to produce a valid license for,” said Mdhluli.

The suspect was granted bail of R1000 by the court on Tuesday. His next court appearance is expected on 28 October.

The provincial commissioner of the police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela, praised the FCS Unit for their “sterling efforts,” he also applauded the public for their role in the suspect’s arrest.
