NEWSFLASH: Man stormed and KILLED by hippo in Kruger National Park

A senior SANParks manager was stormed and killed by HIPPO in the Kruger National Park on Saturday. Here is the latest.

A senior SANParks manager was killed by HIPPO in the Kruger National Park on Saturday.

NEWSFLASH – THE SENIOR MANAGER WAS STORMED AND KILLED BY A HIPPO

According to spokesperson Isaac Phaahla the senior manager, Kobus de Wet, was stormed and killed by a hippo while camping in the Kruger National Park.

De Wet was a senior manager in the Environmental Crime Investigative Unit (ECI) based at Groenkloof in Pretoria.

Phaahla furthermore said an investigation had been launched.

“Details are sketchy at this stage, and circumstances around the incident are under investigation. SANParks Executive Management sends out sincere condolences to his immediate family, friends, and the SANParks family.”

THE INCIDENT ARE UNDER INVESTIGATION

He added that a memorial and funeral arrangements are underway.

Last year, a brave ranger from the Kruger National Park (KNP) lost his life after being attacked by a buffalo bull.

Shado Mathebula (36) died in May 2022 while on foot patrol with his colleague.

BUFFALO BULL CHARGES AT RANGERS ON PATROL

Mathebula and his colleague were on foot patrol when a buffalo charged at them at the Shangoni section. 

Phaahla said the rangers let go of one round but only managed to injure the bull. 

“The bull was only injured, it did not completely go down. As they [Mathebula and his colleague] were following the blood trail, the bull attacked them from the side from what we hear,” 

Phaahla said.

MATHEBULA WAS DECLARED ON THE SCENE AND THE ANIMAL WAS DESPTROYED

Mathebula was declared dead on the scene and the buffalo bull animal was also destroyed, as Phahla explained. 

It is not known what could have triggered the bull to attack the rangers.
