A young man was detained in Zone 4, Selosesha for illegally carrying 98 identity documents and over 100 bank cards.

On Friday, 11 August 2023, a young man was detained in Zone 4, Selosesha possessing 98 identity documents and over 100 bank cards.

According to SAPS statement, Selosesha Public Order Policing members received intelligence-led information regarding a man in possession of a number of Identity Documents on Friday 11 August 2023, about 21:30.

How did they find the man?

Members followed the lead, which led them to a residence in Zone 4, Selosesha. Upon arrival, members saw a 28-year-old suspect in possession of 42 Smart card IDs, one Lesotho Passport, 55 Republic of South Africa issued ID booklets, 105 bank cards from various RSA banking institutions, and a birth certificate.

Investigations are underway to determine why he was in possession of personal documents from other people. He was detained for illegally possessing identification documents and violating the Immigration Act.

People on social media speculated that the young man was a loan shark, which is why he had so many identity cards.

“No one lost anything, all those documents belong to people that took out loans with the suspect,” said one of the comments.

“someone couldn’t pay back their loan and called the police on their trusted loan shark”, other comment stated.

Police are urging anyone who may have lost or surrendered their Identity Document to the 28-year-old to go to Selosesha Police Station to collect their personal documents.

When will he appear in court?

He is scheduled to appear before Thaba Nchu Magistrate, the date is still not confirmed.
