A horrific multiple vehicle collision on the N3 highway at Hidcote, KwaZulu-Natal on Monday afternoon, 10 May, has left at least seven people dead. It is believed that a bus, oil tanker and several smaller passenger vehicles were involved in the collision between Estcourt and Mooi River.
KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services (EMS) provided an update from the scene of the collision on the N3 at 19:13 that said that seven people sustained fatal injuries in the accident. The northbound carriageway at Hidcote remains closed – and will probably remain so for quite some time – while the southbound one is allowing traffic to pass through.
Both the tanker, which was reportedly transporting a hazardous substance, and the bus caught fire. Initial reports suggested that approximately 50 people were injured in the N3 accident and several of them were in a critical condition.
The accident reportedly took place at 15:45 on Monday afternoon. By 17:47, provincial EMS said there had been four fatalities and less than two hours later the death toll had risen to seven.
