EFF DA divorce

Maepa accuses EFF of trying to dodge its responsibilities in Tshwane

Kgosi Maepa is not happy the EFF and DA are unable to work out their petty squabbles to act in the interests of the people of Tshwane.

EFF DA divorce

African National Congress (ANC) Tshwane regional chairperson Kgosi Maepa believes the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are divorcing from the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the region to avoid having to take responsibilities for the mistakes that were made while the DA was in charge of the metro.

EFF stop supporting DA

Earlier in the week, EFF leader Julius Malema announced in no uncertain terms that his party would no longer be supporting the DA in the Johannesburg and Tshwane metros.

This was a significant move, because the DA was only in charge of both regions because of the support lent to it by the EFF.

Speaking at a media briefing in Tshwane, he took a dim view on the EFF turning tail just as things were starting to get tough.

“The EFF is running from taking responsibility. They voted for the DA to run these metros. When the chickens come home to roost, they run away. That’s why I said when you in a divorce, go to court. You wait for the judge to give the degree of divorce and, in that divorce process, you file papers to say why you are divorcing and give reasons.

“They must sit down and take collective responsibility as the DA and EFF for damaging our metros. Right now, the EFF is running away from doing that function.

“The DA and EFF coalition failed in its fiduciary responsibilities of due diligence. They did not look after the money, fiscal planning was out of sync. So they have dropped all their standards in terms of how to manage finances.”

Not interested in taking charge

He went on to explain that the ANC is not necessarily look to take over in either metro as their primary goal is to ensure that services are delivered to residents, so whatever it takes to make that happen in the best way possible is their target.

“So as the ANC, our position is that we will continue as an effective opposition. There must be intervention in the city to make sure we manage things prudently and properly to a point where the residence continue to get services,” he added.

“The people are what is important here. It’s not palace politics of who becomes the mayor and so on, it’s the people getting services. That’s what counts, that’s the primary objective.”

Mashaba thanks EFF for their support

On the flip side in the messy divorce, former Joburg mayor Herman Mashaba came out to thank the EFF for their support in securing the metro in the first place. Something which, he says, he will be forever grateful for.

“I can speak for Joburg, I have had a very mutually beneficial relationship with the EFF and will be forever grateful to the support they gave to my administration, in the event the government collapses,” Mashaba told the Power987 radio station.
