William Kentridge 2

5 Reasons to get off your butt and visit The Kentridge Room at The RA Summer Exhibition tomorrow!

1) He’s a god
William Kentridge
is one of those rarest of creatures, a South African artist vaunted beyond the apartheid whiff that still clings to us all. The more people love him, the more eyes are opened to SA art in general.

2) The work is good
You can pretty much guarantee WK’s work will never be substandard but the tree series is Kentridge at his quintessential graphic best. However, come and make up your own mind?

3) It makes you feel good to be South African
The Royal Academy is all about tradition and establishment. Call it toadyism, but it feels good to have big brother pat you on the back occasionally (even if you do have to launder your shirt afterwards).

4) The rest of the show is fascinating (closes Aug 16)
Someone described the RA Summer shows as ‘The Wimbledon of the Art world’. One of the great things is that all prices are published in a little booklet supplied with your ticket. So, unlike shows like Frieze etc, you know what the works are selling for and can learn something about art buying and value.

5) One of the rooms is painted entirely pink
It’s unusual and fun contemplate over a late-summer glass of wine.
