eThekwini Municipality on high alert as SAWS issues warning for severe thunderstorms

Emergency services from the eThekwini Municipality are on high alert following a warning for severe thunderstorms and possible flooding.

The eThekwini Municipality has urged motorists to exercise extreme caution after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms and rainfall. 

The warning was issued on Wednesday and is valid until Thursday night, 12 October. 

SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS EXPECTED IN PARTS OF KZN

The municipality said its emergency and response teams continue to be on high alert following a level 4 weather warning issued by the South African Weather Service.

“According to the weather service, there is a probability of localised flooding expected today 12 October. Roads and low-lying settlements are particularly prone to flooding. Excessive lightning is also expected. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution and maintain a safe following distance while driving on wet roads,” eThekwini Municipality said.

In the warning the weather service said scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers are expected in KwaZulu-Natal with a possibility of them becoming severe in some places over the province resulting in significant impacts.

“These storms are expected to to be accompanied by heavy downpours, strong winds and excessive lightning,” SAWS said.
