Born as Mthembeni Ndevu, Emtee came to the limelight after the release of his debut single, Roll Up in 2015. Additionally, in the same year, he released his first album titled DIY.

He was born on 17 September 1992 as Mthembeni Ndevu in Matatiele, Eastern Cape, South Africa. As of this writing, he is 31 years and his star sign is Virgo.

Although not much about his family is known, Emtee’s parents are  Phathiswa and Lumkile Ndevu. Additionally, he has two younger siblings who are both in the music industry. His younger brother, Luthando Ndevu is his DJ and his sister, PhiweA is his personal assistant.


According to Briefly News, the rapper got into music at 9, participating in the Yeoville Primary School talent show. Subsequently, during his high school years, he acquired the skills to compose and produce music in both Zulu and English. Furthermore, Emtee engaged in numerous talent shows in Soweto, and he actively contributed as a choir member in his high school. Additionally, his marimba band achieved considerable success, securing numerous cash prizes in provincial competitions.

The rapper achieved his breakthrough with the hit single Roll Up, released in 2015. This was shortly after signing with Ambitiouz Entertainment. In the same year, his debut album titled DIY came out. He also released Avery, which not only enjoyed commercial success but also earned platinum certification from the Recording Industry of South Africa.

As per Deezer, he released three other albums, Manando(2017), DIY 2(2018), and Melhores Beats (Volume 1) (2019).

In 2018, taking a significant step in his career, he forged his own path by establishing eMtee Records. This was in collaboration with the African Trap Movement. This move paved the way for the release of his third studio album, Logan, in 2021, which made its debut at the number-one spot on South African charts.

In 2023, the rapper announced that he was going to release his seventh album, DIY 3.


Emtee has had a controversial life, especially with his ex-wife and baby mama Nicole Chinsamy. According to Times Live, the rapper filed for a divorce in May 2023 and moved out to their shared apartment.

On March 2023, the rapper went viral during his Instagram live after Nicole accused him of physically assaulting her when she was seven months pregnant. According to gender-based advocates Women For Change, Nicole laid charges of assault against Emtee.

The couple first met in 2012 through mutual friends. At that time, Nicole was still in Waverly High School. It was in 2018, during their trip to Ghana for the AFRIMA Awards when Emtee proposed to Nicole and they got engaged. The couple now has three children, starting with their firstborn son Avery who was born in 2015, followed by their second son Logan on 29 January 2018, and their newly born daughter named Nairobi.


Emtee actively engages with his substantial social media following, boasting over 1.9 million followers on Instagram and 223,000 on X. He adeptly utilizes these platforms to promote his music and various projects. Beyond his professional endeavours, his posts showcase him as a devoted family man, often sharing moments spent with his loved ones.
