Above 50mm rain expected in KwaZulu-Natal following flash floods

Just days after more bodies were discovered following flash floods in KwaZulu-Natal. A warning for more disruptive rain has been issued.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government has urged residents to avoid crossing swollen rivers and to consider delaying travel plans as disruptive rain is expected in the province.

According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS) the warning is valid until 23:00 on Monday, 8 January.

DISRUPTIVE RAIN EXPECTED IN KWAZULU-NATAL

The weather service said scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers are expected over KZN on Monday.

“Models indicate significant amounts of rainfall of more than 50mm over the western parts as well as over the southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal which may lead to flooding as well as localised impacts,” the weather service warned.

This may result in flooding roads, settlements, and low-lying areas, potentially causing bridge and road closures. Residents may expect disruptions to traffic flow due to major roads being flooded or blocked by fallen trees.

WARNING ISSUED FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS

Meanwhile, on Sunday, 7 January, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs issued a warning over severe thuderstorms in the western and midlands parts of the province.

The department said it has activated disaster management teams in all affected municipalities, ensuring they remain on high alert during this period.
