No confidence motion against City of Joburg mayor withdrawn

ActionSA has withdrawn the no confidence motion against City of Joburg mayor Kabelo Gwamanda.

Gwamanda was set to face the motion at a council meeting this week.

As previously reported by The South African, ActionSA filed the motion following a Carte Blanche exposé which revealed that Gwamanda is alleged to have defrauded vulnerable people through a funeral scheme as well as serious questions about his claims of academic qualifications. 

The party said Johannesburg deserves better than a Mayor from a two-seat party that cannot be trusted by his own coalition partners to answer simple and direct questions about the allegations he faces.

On Monday, 28 August, ActionSA National Chairperson Michael Beaumont said the withdrawal of the motion of no confidence is a difficult decision but necessitated after the DA confirmed categorically that they would not support the motion to remove Gwamanda.

Beaumont said without the DA support, the motion cannot succeed and continuing with it would only serve to damage the image of the Multi-Party Charter for South Africa. 

“ActionSA and our partners in the IFP, FF Plus, ACDP and UIM will use the time afforded by the temporary withdrawal to engage the DA to assist them to look beyond their narrow interests in the Western Cape,” he said.

DA GAUTENG WANTS COUNCIL DISSOLVED

Meanwhile, the DA in Gauteng is calling for the City of Johannesburg council to be dissolved.

Last week, DA Chairperson in Gauteng, Fred Nel said at the Johannesburg city council meeting on Thursday, 31 August, the party will move for an amendment to the motion of no confidence that has been filed against the mayor.

Nel said the amendment will call for the motion to be postponed until 2 November, when two years have elapsed and the council will be legally entitled to dissolve itself.

“Our amendment will move that the Johannesburg council dissolve itself as soon as possible in order for new elections to take place. Should our motion succeed, by-elections will be held across Joburg within 90 days, giving voters another chance to elect a new, more stable city council that can begin to rescue our country’s biggest city,” he explained.
