Johannesburg Water encourages rainwater harvesting

With level -1 water restrictions currently in place, Johannesburg Water sees it apt that residents benefit from rainwater harvesting.

Johannesburg Water has encouraged residents to take advantage of the heavy rainfall by harvesting the rainwater.

PERFECT SEASON TO START RAINWATER HARVESTING

With level -1 water restrictions currently in place, Johannesburg Water sees it apt that residents benefit from rainwater harvesting.

“Rainwater harvesting can be useful during times of intermittent supply by providing you with water to flush your toilet, water your garden, and even wash your car,” the entity advised.

JOHANNESBURG WATER PROVIDES SMART TIPS

Here are more tips to take advantage of rainwater harvesting

  • Less cost
  • Helps in reducing the water bill
  • Decrease the demand for water
  • Promotes both water and energy conservation
  • Improves the quality and quantity of groundwater
  • Does not require a filtration system for landscape irrigation
  • It reduces soil erosion, stormwater runoff, flooding and pollution of the surface with fertilisers, pesticides, metals and other sediments
  • It is an excellent source of water for landscape irrigation with no chemicals, or dissolved salts and free from all minerals

THE DURATION OF LEVEL-1 WATER RESTRICTIONS

 Level-1 Water restrictions run from 1 September to 31 March, annually. The restrictions are due to increasing water consumption caused by warmer weather and lack of rain.

Now more than ever, Johannesburg Water advised it is imperative that we change our habits when it comes to water use.

“We can make a difference by introducing one small change a day,” said the entity.

TIPS TO REDUCE WATER CONSUMPTION

Here are simple water-saving habits to implement into your daily routine

  • Do not leave taps dripping
  • wash your car on the grass with grey water as this will water your lawn at the same time
  • Shorten your showering time
  • Use a glass of water to rinse when brushing your teeth
  • Take shallow baths and avoid filling your bath to a depth greater than 100mm
  • Reuse grey water to wash your garden or pot plants
  • Fix all leaking plumbing features in your house

Having committed to providing sustainable water, the entity warned water restrictions will be enforced by fines to customers who contravene the Water Services By-Law.
