Joburg Mayor promises Road Blocks, Stop & Searches in Westbury

City of Johannesburg Mayor Thapelo Amad has promised to intensify police visibility by deploying JMPD in Westbury.

City of Joburg Mayor Thapelo Amad added his commitment to the fight against violent crimes in the community of Westbury.

COJ MAYOR SHARES HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE FIGHT AGAINST CRIME

Mayor Amad formed part of a delegation from government led by Minister of Police Bheki Cele to address issues of crime affecting the community.

“This community engagement aims to strengthen community-policing relations in this area, and enable the police to make a positive impact in resolving the spate of crimes in Sophiatown.”

MINISTER OF POLICE CELE DEPLOYS SPECIAL FORCES

With Minister of Police Bheki Cele promising the community to deploy Special Forces comprising Amaberets, TRT, NIU, and other units to fight crime in Westbury, Joburg Mayor also committed to deploying the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) in beefing up policing.

“I know Premier Panyaza Lesufi has also in his State of the Province Address (SOPA) spoken strongly against crime that is happening in the province. So we will continue with roadblocks because this is what the community has requested. We will bring visible roadblocks on the access points of this community, we will also do stop and search to ensure that we take guns from pedestrians and those kept inside residences,” he vowed.

AMAD VOWS TO RESPOND TO TIP-OFF FROM WESTBURY

Mayor Amad also vowed to follow up on tip-offs, saying, “where ever the community name drops, we will go there and raid and ensure that the perpetrators are arrested. We will be working closely with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure that there is no crime in this region. However, this commitment is not for only Region B but for the entire City of Johannesburg”.

In closing, the police have urged community leaders and members of the community to work closely with the police to get to the root cause of crime in the area.
